The Basalt Tiles

CHARACTERISTICS

The characteristics of Basalt tiles consist in extraordinary materials and processing. The old Lava of the million year old Basalt is quarried from the Basalt bodies and broken into big pieces. It is cast in metal forms at 1300° and it undergoes a 30 hour thermal process of re-crystallization. The result is: extraordinary tiles with inimitable and particular colourings. These tiles have the magic of a natural material: a  centuries old material, hand cast, low and sound, precious and sole in its tonalities.
Each single tile is sole and unique. The process respects the production of antique manual ceramic work, rich in tradition, whose characteristics in this tile cannot be reproduced artfully; on the contrary, they naturally exist based on the type of production: irregular sides, little fissures and irregularities on the surface, pores and prints caused by manual cast. The colour tonality of a tile ranges from black to bronze, green to brick red and with metal reflexes. All these characteristics give to Basalt tiles a natural beauty and an innovation. This tile cannot be compared to other floor tiles, which are actually in production.

The principal characteristics of Basalt are:

  • the manual cast of the million year old Basalt stones
  • Singleness of each tile
  • precious and natural, for innovation projects chosen from the Architects

 PECULIARITIES

Basalt tiles are abrasion-resistant and indestructible. The most important characteristic of Basalt is its extraordinary abrasion-resistance, which is guaranteed by tile hardness and very high thickness.
The hardness value is about 8 of the Mohsparameter (diamond is 10) and the thickness is 2,80 kg/dm3. Basalt tiles are frost resistant, because they do not no absorb water (0 %).
Basalt tiles have an extraordinary thermal accumulation capacity. This is also due to the fact that these tiles are very heavy. The 2,2 thickness cm weights about 60 kg/m2, the 3 cm thickness about 80 kg/m2.

Basalt tiles are resistant to almost all acids (except hydrofluoric acids) and alkali and are natural products, which don’t contain radio-active elements.

EMPLOYING AREAS

Basalt tiles are employed particularly in very stressed areas in industries, markets and public buildings i. e.:

  • hotel halls
  • restaurants
  • shopspublic
  • buildings
  • sport clubs
  • terrace
  • wine-cellar
  • parkings and warehouses
  • floors in various kinds
  • transitions
  • squares
  • art galleries
  • residences

LAYING

The laying can be made with glues or with sand and cement. Glues must guarantee a 100 % adhesion and products have to be suggested from the producer. If you employ sand and cement we suggest the grout in sand and Portand cement. A 5 mm joint is recommended.

Tiles are cut with the traditional water/diamond clipper.

The joint sealing can only be effected when the grout or the glue are set completely, because the water absorption of this tile is zero. The sealing is carried out therefore with the employ of special cement products as Sopro Titanfuge article 554 in colours grey and anthracite or Sopro Meisterfuge article 539 in colours grey and anthracite. In any case follow the producer instructions. Immediately after joint sealing, if necessary, tiles can be cleaned yet during the stucco phase; the stucco rests will be eliminated with a sponge and an acid-free product to remove the cement thin layer and avoid that the colour loose its brilliance of the metal oxides.

MAINTENANCE

It’s very easy to clean Basalt tiles. They can be maintained like all traditional ceramic tiles. Weapon products like sodium hydroxide, muriatic acid and other acids cannot be employed.

FLOOR TILES

Floorings with Basalt tiles types METROPAN 1 and METROPAN 2 are especially indicated in open areas with high traffic, where motor vehicles enter in public buildings etc.

For the increasingly used system to warm external surfaces with thermal electric cables, floorings with Basalt tiles are the most suitable owing to their physical characteristics. These floor tiles and the choice of thermal isolation depend on their use (slip roads for motor vehicles, loading ramps, pavements etc.). A further advantage of Basalt tile is their dark colour; even the littlest sunray dries surfaces, which don’t absorb. With the combination of paved types it’s possible to use Basalt as reference mark for the blind gut.

ANTISLIP TILES WITH RELIEF SURFACES

These tiles are particularly indicated for humid and slippery rooms, i.e. food industries, great kitchens and big sheds, internal and external. This antislip system with relief surface is easy to clean.
